Documenting and mapping the global expansion of industrial fishing from 1950 to 2018

In late September, the Sea Around Us principal investigator, Dr. Daniel Pauly, was among the virtual presenters at the World Fisheries Congress 2021, which was held in a hybrid format that included in-person presentations in Adelaide and online lectures, recorded sessions and discussion forums.

Titled “Documenting and mapping the global expansion of industrial fishing from 1950 to 2018,” Dr. Pauly’s presentation highlights some of the reasons that explain the reduction of the fish biomass throughout the world and the methods behind and results of a series of global assessments carried out by the Sea Around Us, Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean, FishBase and SeaLifeBase teams.

Such assessments were performed together with Dr. Maria Palomares, Luisa Abucay, Dr. Nicolas Bailly, Sydney Baxter, Elizabeth David, Selina Leon, Maria Frias-Donaghey, Angelica Parducho, Rebecca Schijns, Dr. Gabriel Vianna, Dr. Rainer Froese and Dr. Dirk Zeller.

Below is the video of Dr. Pauly’s presentation.
