In a ceremony presided by Dr Meigan Aronson, Dean of Science, Dr Palomares was recognized for her exceptional contributions to the advancement of fisheries research at UBC’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries.
Besides praising Dr Palomares’ two-decade professional journey at UBC, Dr Aronson congratulated her for motivating the Sea Around Us research assistants and volunteers to apply a newly developed, computer-intensive method of ‘stock assessment’ -CMSY- to the catch statistics of essentially all maritime countries of the world.
According to the quote read by the Dean, by encouraging this work and making the results available on the Sea Around Us website, Dr Palomares achieved what has been considered for a long time the ‘holy grail’ in fisheries science.
Together with Dr Palomares, nine brilliant researchers from the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, the Michael Smith Labs and the departments of Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Botany Mathematics, Chemistry, and Microbiology and Immunology, were recognized for their scientific contributions.
