Vital research based on Sea Around Us data: Insights from the FishBase and SeaLifeBase Symposium

Daniel and Deng in Thessaloniki 2024

The Sea Around Us initiative turned 25 years old in July 2024.

To mark this milestone, the team produced a large poster highlighting some of the research accomplishments that turned the project into a reputable voice when it comes to fisheries data, and fish population management and conservation.

We also published the report Focus on People, which was meant to draw attention to the work of the 200 people from over 40 countries who have been part of the project, from senior researchers to volunteers.

In addition to these dissemination products and countless social media posts, this 25th anniversary inspired a series of presentations at the 22nd FishBase and SeaLifeBase Symposium, hosted by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Titled “Fishes in Changing Ecosystems,” the two-day event started on September 2, 2024, with a full day dedicated to some of the overarching themes the Sea Around Us team is doing research on.

The first half of the day was dedicated to the Gill Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT), developed by the Sea Around Us Principal Investigator, Dr. Daniel Pauly, in the late 1970s.

The second half of the day focused on key past and present research conducted by the Sea Around Us, as well as by other organizations, which would not have been possible without the catch data available on our website. From reconstructing freshwater fisheries catches in Canada to analyzing the effectiveness of stock assessment models that rely on catch data, this symposium session closed our anniversary celebrations with a flourish.
