A new study suggests the hidden climate costs of bottom trawling in European waters may far outweigh its economic benefits, raising questions about the future of one of the world’s most widespread fishing practices.

During the 2024 Meeting of the Seas held in Tenerife, Spain, the Sea Around Us principal investigator, Dr. Daniel Pauly, was granted the Sartún Award, in recognition of his +40-year career working for the protection of the global ocean.

The Sea Around Us principal investigator, Dr. Daniel Pauly, and associated faculty, Dr. Rashid Sumaila, both based at the University of British Columbia’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, feature in a new film aimed at supporting a critical World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement on fishing subsidies, as the international community races to lock the deal in place before it expires in 2024.
