Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Emily developed an early passion for the environment after learning about climate change at a young age. This interest led her to study Marine and Freshwater Biology at the University of Guelph, where she developed a strong interest in fish physiology and adaptation to environmental shifts.
During her undergraduate studies, she completed an internship with the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation in Greece, which deepened her interest in conservation and provided hands-on experience in marine pollution research and biodiversity studies, including work on microplastics.
After graduating, Emily moved to England in 2024 to complete a master’s degree in marine vertebrate ecology and conservation at the University of Exeter. Her research project explored the social dimensions of conservation, including shark and ray consumption in South Asia, which reinforced her understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of conservation.
In 2026, Emily joined the Sea Around Us team, where she is working on demonstrating how simplified representations of biological processes influence interpretations of fish physiology and ecological responses across marine ecosystems.
Alongside her research, Emily works as a podcast producer for Reef Scuba, helping communicate marine science and conservation stories to a global audience.
In the future, Emily hopes to contribute to sustainable fisheries management by improving knowledge of the socio-cultural drivers of marine wildlife exploitation and helping develop policies that reduce unsustainable resource use.
When she is not working, Emily enjoys travelling and spending time near the ocean.
