Carolina is an incoming master’s student at UBC under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Pauly. She has a social science background from the Central European University and the Universität für Bodenkultur Wien (BOKU) and has always been passionate about the current food systems, specifically how they relate to environmental degradation and concomitant social injustices.
After volunteering with and working for a climate justice movement called Plant-based Universities, she became increasingly interested in fish and decided to pursue her graduate studies in Canada. Besides the immense and multifaceted importance of healthy fish stocks, the uniqueness of the Sea Around Us researchers inspired her decision. The department’s interdisciplinarity, meticulousness and boldness are what drew her to its publications and ultimately gave her the tools to become part of the solution(s).
Her current research topic is related to the Gill-Oxygen-Limitation Theory (GOLT). It aims to provide insights into the relationship between oxygen levels in water and the switching of sexes in hermaphroditic fish. By researching the GOLT, Carolina hopes to contribute to the ecological understanding needed for fish management in the context of warming waters due to climate change.
In her free time, Carolina likes to hike, go for cold ocean dips and practice handstands.
