Jules Garneau – Visiting Researcher

Jules Garneau

Jules was born and raised in Montreal on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. As a child, he spent most of his days in the forest, busy building treehouses and trying to spot all the different species of birds and animals living in the woods and in the vast marsh near his home. Lifting rocks to find salamanders, catching frogs, and lying on the ground to listen to and watch birds were his favorite pastimes.

At a very young age, he developed a sense of duty to protect nature. In 2023, he participated in the Montreal Climate Summit. At just 15 years old, he had the courage to ask questions to the panelists in front of an audience of renowned activists, corporate executives, and journalists.

A year later, Jules felt a calling from the ocean, during a snorkeling trip in Guadeloupe. Having completed his pre-university diploma, he plans to pursue studies in marine biology to answer that calling and to have a real positive impact on the environment. His dream job would be to participate in research and raise awareness in a practical, hands-on way in the field.

His work with Daniel Pauly consists of testing the Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT) on a family of annelid worms known as Polychaeta. In his free time, Jules loves hiking, watching motorsports, and playing sports.
