Emma is beginning her Master’s degree at UBC and the Sea Around Us Initiative.
Before this new phase, she spent several years working for nonprofit organizations, where she developed a background in marine mammal research. For the past five field seasons, she has collected and reported on marine mammal data in the traditional territory of the Liq’wala-speaking peoples (Quadra Island). Her primary focus to date has been on vessel traffic patterns and human disturbance around cetaceans. Through this work, she has curated a vast skill set, from vessel operation to satellite tag deployment for entangled cetaceans.
She is also passionate about science communications, as she believes a significant part of conservation starts with public education and understanding.
In her free time, Emma can be found snorkelling, illustrating, and foraging in her local forest and waterways.
