Maaike Tiersma – Research Volunteer

MaikeMaaike graduated with a degree in Conservation Policy and Science in 2017 from Brown University focusing on the impacts and investment into shellfish aquaculture in the United States.

She has joined the Sea Around Us as part of the fishing effort team and is excited to be back in her childhood home among the trees and mountains of the Pacific Northwest.

Growing up on a community-run tree farm not far from Seattle, Washington, Maaike has always been passionate about working towards sustainably-managed ecosystems. She enjoys caring for the tree farm with the other members of her community.

In 2018, she will continue her studies in marine biology at the Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research in southern Chile.

When Maaike and her sister are not busy dreaming up ideas about how to win the Amazing Race once they become contestants, she enjoys baking delicious things, rowing, and looking for birds.
