A UBC Fisheries Centre researcher has received a $3-million grant to study the impact of excessive fishing on the marine ecosystems of the north Atlantic. Daniel Pauly, in partnership with U.S. based Pew Charitable Trusts, which provided the funding, will lead a team in analyzing the ecological and economic effects of industrial fishing on the marine ecosystems on both sides of the North Atlantic. The UBC Fisheries Centre is developing a method to evaluate the ecological, economic, cultural and social benefits of rebuilding an ecosystem.
