Surface areas are expressed in km² and were obtained by overlaying a global 2-minute cell ESRI GRID of surface area values with a matching ESRI GRID of LME areas prepared from shapefiles available from www.lme.noaa.gov.  For each LME the intersecting surface area based on the 2-minute raster was extracted and summed.
