Response to Fishy Opinion in the New York Times

In response to the belief that “fish stocks worldwide appear to be stable, and in the United States they are rebuilding, in many cases at a rapid rate”, several scientists responded in The New York Times, including Dr. Daniel Pauly.

The Sea Around Us Project is a scientific collaboration between the University of British Columbia and the Pew Environment Group that began in July 1999.

The aims of the project are to provide an integrated analysis of the impacts of fisheries on marine ecosystems, and to devise policies that can mitigate and reverse harmful trends whilst ensuring the social and economic benefits of sustainable fisheries. The Sea Around Us has assembled global databases of catches, distribution of commercial marine species, countries fishing access agreements, ex-vessel prices, marine protected areas and other data—all available online with the hopes of collaboration. The Logo

The logo of the Sea Around Us Project depicts elements of a marine ecosystem. Designed by Ms. Mary Boone, the logo consists of three segments representing marine life: a fish, a sea turtle, and sea grass. The fish segment moves toward the other three puzzle pieces, and the counterclockwise motion represents ecosystem rebuilding. In full colour, the fish segment is in UBC Gold, as a metaphor for the lasting value of fish. The remaining segments are in marine blue. These colours also occur in the Fisheries Centre's logo.
